Celebrating Our Surroundings!

The Lower Mill Art Center and Gallery is pleased to announce the opening reception of this summer’s art show, “Celebrating Our Surroundings,” to benefit The Finger Lakes Museum.  An opening reception will be held June 13, 2013 at The Lower Mill in Honeoye Falls, NY.  This juried show will be on display throughout the summer, ending August 24, 2013. 

Artists interested in being included are encouraged to submit their entries by May 15, 2013.  To generate funds for The Finger Lakes Museum, a submission fee of $30 for up to three entries is requested.  Please fill out the document below and mail, along with photos of your art, to:

MUSEUM HOSTS FIRST ANNUAL WINTERFEST

Keuka Park, NY – Warm up, chill out and boogie down at the first annual Brrranchport Winterfest on Saturday, February 23^rd from 2pm to 8pm.  Sponsored by the Branchport Fire Department and The Finger Lakes Museum, this 2013 Brrranchport Winterfest will feature an afternoon filled with fun outdoor activities, local foods and drinks for purchase, a community bonfire, and live music by local rock ‘n roll band, Agonal Rhythm.

This event is FREE to the public and all are welcome to attend.  Additional activities will include: Icelandic horse rides, nature hikes, storytelling, arts & crafts, and much more.  Hear from Museum staff during an informal presentation at the Branchport Fire Hall about the Museum’s current efforts in Branchport and around the region.

Museum Education Director Mike Sullivan stated, “The Museum is excited to partner with the Branchport Fire Department in hosting the winterfest. It’s a great way to bring the Finger Lakes community together to share in some winter food and fun, and to fill folks in on the progress of the Museum and its Discovery Campus.  We hope you will join us!”

MUSEUM HIRES EDUCATION DIRECTOR

Keuka native returns home

Keuka Park, NY – The Finger Lakes Museum recently hired Keuka Lake native Mike Sullivan as its Education Director.  He brings an extensive background in classroom instruction, museum education, and non-profit management to the organization.

Sullivan grew up on Keuka Lake and attended Penn Yan schools.  After earning a Bachelors of Arts degree in anthropology, he served as program director and exhibit developer at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, taught fourth grade in Honduras, and middle school math and science in Washington, DC.

While earning his Masters degree in public anthropology, Sullivan mentored and taught high school students for a job-training initiative, focused on green design, sustainable planning, and youth development.  After receiving his advanced degree, Sullivan moved his family to New Mexico where he spent the last five years leading a wilderness education program for youth from around the world.

Sullivan said, “As an anthropologist with a love of natural science, I am honored and excited to build the educational programs at The Finger Lakes Museum.  I believe that the Museum is a critical asset to the region and I’m eager to work with colleagues, communities, and students throughout the Finger Lakes to collaborate in the creation of this inspirational museum.”

Museum Executive Director, Don Naetzker said “We are thrilled to have Mike on board.  His ambitious attitude, innate leadership capabilities and love of the outdoors fit well with the Museum’s culture.  With Mike now on the team, we look forward to a year full of fun, authentic, educational programs, which will lead to an increased awareness and further support of The Finger Lakes Museum.”

The Finger Lakes Museum is being planned to be the premier cultural and natural resource dedicated to the enjoyment, education and stewardship of the Finger Lakes Region and to fresh water conservation.  It is chartered by the New York State Education Department and incorporated as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization.
